RURAL SNAPSHOT

Agricultural Census 2011

www.abs.gov.au/agcensus2011

Approximately 170,000 agricultural businesses will contribute to the second biggest data collection project in Australia – the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ 2011 Agricultural Census.

The Agricultural Census is the primary source of information about the agricultural sector in Australia, and the only source of agricultural information for some small regions.

What is the Agricultural Census?

The Agricultural Census is conducted every five years and is the second largest collection undertaken in Australia after the Census of Population and Housing, which is also conducted five-yearly. Participation by agricultural businesses is vitally important. By responding to the Agricultural Census, producers are assisting their industry and their communities.

The Agricultural Census provides a detailed picture of what is happening in the Australian agricultural sector at the regional level. It provides vital information on agricultural production, water and land management practices throughout Australia and provides a detailed understanding of the contribution that agriculture makes to the national economy. The information gathered through the Agricultural Census can help to influence decisions that will shape the future of Australian agriculture.

The 2011 Agricultural Census

The 2011 Agricultural Census will be despatched to approximately 175,000 agricultural businesses across Australia in June 2011. The ABS recognises that Australians are increasingly moving towards using the Internet for many of their day to day tasks and now expect government services to be available electronically. For the first time, this year's Agricultural Census form can be completed online and the ABS is encouraging as many agricultural respondents to make use of this electronic option to provide their information. You can access the Agricultural Census online option once you receive your paper form in June 2011.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

Men's Health Week

Mens_Health WeekMen's Health Week June 13-19 is an initative of Men's Health Australia which is Australia's primary source of information about the psychological and social wellbeing of men and boys. It has been developed in partnership with the Men's Health Information & Resource Centre (MHIRC) at the University of Western Sydney and the Australasian Men's Health Forum (AMHF).

Celebrating Men’s Health Week each year is one of the best ways of recognising and celebrating the resourcefulness, determination, wisdom and stenghts of Australian men in their efforts to build healthy environments, often in the face of significant adversity, disadvantage and neglect.

It is also a time to raise community awareness about the still poor state of men’s health and wellbeing in Australia today.

There are many factors impacting on the physical, social, emotional, cultural and spiritual health of all Australian men and boys – changing social and economic roles and loss of identity; changing notions of men’s roles in society and families; relationship breakdown; racism; homophobia; negative attitudes towards disability; a propensity to specific life threatening diseases and injury; mental health issues including depression, anxiety and suicide; unemployment, low wages, working patterns and hours, fathering and the issues of separated fathers; as well as services which are lacking in responsiveness to men’s health and wellbeing needs.
